A Journey to Self-Improvement
The journey towards personal development begins by doing self-discovery. Upon completing this process, you begin to self-actualize. When you begin to self-actualize, you will begin to see your hopes and aspirations unfold before of you. Before you can become the person you want to be, it is important to first have a firm understanding of yourself: your strengths, weaknesses, talents, skills and other abilities. The saying that best captures this process is that Rome was not built in a day. For those of you who are students of history, you understand that the Roman Empire was built over hundreds of years; centuries of unimaginable violence and an unwavering zeal to conquer.
Having pointed that out, it is important that we first start by acknowledging the fact that self-improvement is not something you achieve overnight. It is described by life coaches and religious teachers as a lifelong process. There is no silver bullet solution to this issue. Self-improvement is the way in which you critically analyze your qualities and skills; and by doing so, you will be able to set goals and maximize your potential. According to experts, the self-improvement journey includes activities that enhance identity and awareness. These activities help you: develop your potential and talents, facilitate employability, build human capital, and enhance the quality of your life.
Self-improvement as a category of Practical Wisdom
According to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, self-improvement is described as a category of practical wisdom that requires you to practice a number of virtues. Ultimately, these practices lead to living well or human flourishing. Aristotle’s concept of self-development continues to influence the concept of self-development all over the world even today. Working towards personal development is not all rainbows and unicorns; it is a strenuous process that requires resilience and hard work. In this article, I will be highlighting a number of simple but concrete procedures that will enable you to embark on this Self Improvement Journey confidently.
Procedure to Self Improvement Journey
Before embarking on any personal development goals, it is important that you establish where you currently stand. You can do this by taking time to critically analyze your life; and thereafter, objectively determine which aspects of your life require improvement. There are a number of questions you can ask yourself to that effect; the questions may take the following form:
- Am I satisfied with my job?
- Do I spend my free time wisely?
- Why am I not able to save money?
- Why do I always procrastinate?
- Are my relationships healthy or toxic?
- Do I need help with my drinking?
- Do I need to stay in this relationship?
By truthfully answering the questions you set for yourself, you will be able to pinpoint the exact areas you need to work on. It is always important that you tackle your issues from an informed point of view.
Analyze your strengths and weaknesses
We all have things we excel at in comparison to other people. Likewise, there are a number of things that may be a challenge to you as an individual, For example, you may find that you are compulsive gambler or liar. Understanding and appreciating your strengths and weaknesses will help you identify an effective plan of action towards self-improvement. Most of us know our strengths but do not understand our weaknesses fully. Your weaknesses may be the reason why you are not able to achieve your goal.
For example, you may be a good listener and a caring spouse who has serious anger management problems. Anger may affect your relationship negatively. It may even lead to a divorce or separation. Your weaknesses can range from social to professional skills. Fortunately, by adopting the right mentality and attitude, you can work on your weaknesses and become a better person. The essence of the self-improvement journey is to correct our weaknesses.
Inspire yourself to improve yourself
When working towards personal improvement, it is important that you inspire yourself to make some changes in your life. This will help you focus on the process. As engage yourself in inspirational practices, you will realize that your zeal for improvement also increases. Inspirational practices will also help you keep the focus on your goals. This is because the journey will be hard and strenuous; and without inspiration, you may find yourself being derailed. Adopting a habit like reading can help you find the inspiration you need to forge on. This is because books are a great source of wisdom; the more you read them, the more you expose yourself to wisdom. As you look for inspiration, you should ensure that your environment is inspirational.
For example, ensure that you tidy up and decorate the place or area you spend most of your time. This will help you find the inspiration you require to move forward every day.
Pick up a new hobby
Instead of spending time with people who add no value to your life, or engaging in self-destructive behaviors like doing drugs; it may be wise for you to consider adopting a new way of spending your free time. You can learn something new like a foreign language, or sporting activity; learning something new forces you to apply yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. This spurs growth in a tremendous way. Additionally, it might give you the distraction you need against things that would otherwise lead you astray. You can also enroll in a course. Courses offer you the opportunity to learn and acquire new skills and knowledge in a particular field. Engaging in such activities will greatly improve your social and professional skills; they also help you become a better person.
Work towards overcoming your fears
We all have our fears. Some fears are realistic while others are totally unrealistic. Be that as it may, fear forms an integral part of the human experience. This being the case, you need to have it in your mind that fear may be the thing that has been stalling your advancement. You need to recognize the fact that your fears pinpoint areas in your life that you need to work on. Fear is a compass for personal growth. If you fear something, it means you need to address that issue. By doing so, you foster personal growth.
Abandon your comfort zone
Real growth is a combination of sweat, tears and hard work. Being in your comfort zone does not help in your endeavor for self-improvement. Staying in your comfort zone leads to stagnation. Dwelling in your comfort zone will ensure that you never seize opportunities as they come. When offered an opportunity, you will begin to pull back unconsciously. This is because, as Martin Luther King said, you dread losing access to your bubble of comfort. When you step outside your comfort zone, you build the confidence you need to pursue your goals. Ultimately, this makes you unstoppable. In life, fortune has always favored the brave.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and so does the journey towards self-improvement. Personal improvement requires you to take small steps at a time. It requires you to be patient and steadfast in your journey. Whatever your limitations are, you do not have to live under their shadows. Adopt the right method and mindset as you embark towards self-improvement journey and you will be surprised how far you will go.
I love you all!! stay on the good path!!
